Car Starter Motor Repair and Replacement in Al Quoz, Dubai
Car starter repair usually begins with a single click. You turn the key in a Mall of the Emirates car park, or press start after a hot drive, and the engine will not turn over. Many UAE drivers call this part the self motor or self starter.
Rapid Rev Garage tests the battery, wiring and starter at our workshop at Al Khail Gate, Al Quoz Industrial Area 2, and can recover your car if it will not start.
- Starting system testing
- Repair or replacement

What Does a Starter Motor Do When You Start Your Car?
The starter motor is a small, powerful electric motor that turns the engine until it can run on its own. When you turn the key or press start, the battery sends power through a relay to the starter solenoid. The solenoid pushes a small gear, called the bendix or drive pinion, into the teeth around the flywheel.
The starter then spins the crankshaft, and the engine fires.
On automatic cars, the toothed plate is called a flexplate. Inside the starter, carbon brushes feed power to a spinning armature. These brushes, the solenoid contacts and the bendix are the parts that wear out most.
Why Start Stop Cars Use Heavier Duty Starters
A car with start stop switches the engine off at every red light, so it may start dozens of times on one commute. HELLA, a major maker of car electrical parts, notes that these cars use starters built for frequent starts. They also use AGM batteries. Both cost more to replace, and the replacement must match the original exactly.
What Should You Do If Your Car Won't Start?
Listen first. What the car does when you turn the key tells you where the fault is.
What you hear | Likely cause |
Nothing, dash lights dim or off | Flat battery or loose battery terminal |
One loud click, lights stay bright | Starter or solenoid |
Rapid clicking | Weak battery |
Slow, heavy cranking | Weak battery or worn starter |
Grinding | Worn bendix or damaged ring gear teeth |
Then try these quick checks:
- Make sure an automatic is in Park, or try starting it in Neutral
- On push button cars, press the brake pedal firmly while you press start
- If the key fob battery may be weak, hold the fob against the start button and press. Motor1 notes this works on many cars, but check your owner’s manual
- Check that the battery terminals are tight and free of white powder
Keep each attempt short. Rick’s Free Auto Repair Advice recommends cranking for no more than about 5 seconds, then waiting about 30 seconds before trying again. Bosch warns that running a starter too long creates heat that shortens its life and can destroy it.
You may read advice to tap the starter with a tool. It sometimes works for a moment on worn brushes, but it means reaching under a car near hot parts, and the starter will fail again soon.
If the battery is the issue, book a jump start in Dubai. If the car still will not start, call our car recovery team.
Signs of a Failing Starter Motor
A failing starter usually gives warnings before it stops completely. Catching them early means you fix it at a workshop instead of a car park.
A Single Click or No Response When You Turn the Key
One click with bright dash lights usually means the solenoid is getting power but the motor is not turning. Worn solenoid contacts or brushes are the common cause.
Grinding Noise When Starting
A grinding sound means the bendix gear is not meshing cleanly with the ring gear. Keep starting the car like this and the flywheel or flexplate teeth can be damaged, which is a far bigger repair.
Slow or Intermittent Cranking
If the car starts some days and not others, or cranks slowly with a good battery, the brushes or internal parts are wearing out. This is often the first sign.
Starts When Cold but Fails After a Hot Drive
On many engines, the starter sits close to the exhaust. After a long summer drive on Sheikh Zayed Road, heat raises the electrical resistance in a worn starter and its solenoid. The car starts fine in the morning but will not restart after you stop for fuel. This is one of the most common starter complaints in Dubai.
Starter Keeps Running After the Engine Starts
If you hear a whirring or grinding after the engine is running, the solenoid contacts may be stuck. Switch the engine off and do not drive. This can burn out the starter and damage the ring gear.
Smoke or a Burning Smell Near the Starter
Smoke from under the car after several start attempts means the starter is overheating. Stop trying to start it and let it cool.
Is It the Starter, the Battery or Something Else?
Many no start problems are not the starter at all. Checking these first can save you paying for a part you did not need.
Possible cause | Typical clue |
Weak or flat battery | Rapid clicking, dim lights, slow crank |
Alternator not charging | Battery keeps going flat after it is charged |
Neutral safety switch (automatics) | Starts in Neutral but not in Park |
Clutch pedal switch (manuals) | No crank even with the clutch fully pressed |
Key fob or immobilizer fault | Dash shows a key warning, no crank at all |
Starter relay or fuse | No click, battery healthy |
Loose cable or ground strap | Works after wiggling the cable |
A battery older than two or three years in Dubai heat is often the real cause. Our car battery replacement service can test it in minutes. If the dash shows a key warning, our car key repair team can check the fob and immobilizer.
How Do You Fix a Bad Car Starter or Self Motor?
You fix it by testing first and replacing only what has failed. A weak battery or a loose cable causes the same symptoms as a bad starter, so a mechanic checks in this order:
- Battery voltage and the battery terminals
- The main starter cable and the ground strap
- The starter relay, fuse and ignition signal
- Voltage at the solenoid while someone turns the key
- The starter on a bench tester, once it is removed
The fix is then a cable, a relay, one part inside the starter, or a full replacement.
Voltage Drop and Current Draw Tests
A voltage drop test shows whether the cables are starving the starter of power. Fluke, which makes the multimeters many workshops use, gives a guide of about 0.3 volts on the positive side and 0.2 volts or less on the ground side while cranking. A higher reading points to a bad cable or connection.
A current draw test then shows whether the starter itself is pulling too much power because it is worn.
Why Push Button Cars May Need a Scan Tool
On keyless cars, the computer must approve the start before the starter gets power. An immobilizer fault or a failed brake switch can stop the start signal, and the starter never turns. A car diagnostic scan reads these fault codes in minutes.
What Damages a Starter Motor in Dubai?
Heat, weak batteries and heavy use are the three main causes. Dubai driving adds a little of each.
Summer Heat Near the Exhaust
Engine bay heat bakes the starter’s windings, solenoid and brushes. Rick’s Free Auto Repair Advice lists under hood heat in hot climates as one cause of starter overheating, and worn starters struggle most on hot restarts.
Oil Leaks Dripping Onto the Starter
Oil that drips onto the starter soaks the brushes and solenoid and shortens their life. A new starter will fail the same way if the leak stays. Our engine repair team can find and fix the leak first.
Long Cranking on a Weak Battery
A weak battery makes the starter pull more current to turn the engine. Rick’s Free Auto Repair Advice notes that below about 12.2 volts, this extra current overheats and damages the windings.
Short Trips and Start Stop Traffic
Every start wears the brushes a little. The same source says a typical starter on a car without start stop is designed for about 50,000 start cycles. Short trips and stop and go driving use those cycles up faster.
Loose Bolts and Wiring From Vibration
Speed bumps and rough roads can loosen starter bolts and cable ends over time. A loose starter does not mesh properly and grinds. Our car electrical repair team checks cables and connections as part of the test.
Can a Car Starter Motor Be Repaired?
Yes, most starters can be repaired when one part has failed. The common wear parts can each be replaced on their own.
Starter Solenoid Repair
The solenoid acts as a heavy duty switch. When its copper contacts burn and pit, you get a single click and no crank. Replacing the contacts or the solenoid often brings the starter back to life.
Carbon Brushes and Bushings
Brushes wear down with every start, and bushings wear as the armature spins. Worn brushes cause slow or patchy cranking, and worn bushings let the armature drag.
Bendix Drive Gear Replacement
A worn bendix slips or grinds against the ring gear. Replacing it early protects the flywheel or flexplate from damage.
When the Armature or Windings Burn Out
If the armature or field windings have burnt from overheating, or the housing is cracked, repair stops being worth it. Starter motor replacement is the better choice.

Is It Worth Repairing a Starter or Should You Replace It?
Repair is worth it when one part has failed and the rest of the starter is in good shape. Starter motor replacement makes more sense when several parts are worn or the windings are damaged.
Option | Cost level | Best for |
Repair one part | Lowest | A worn solenoid, brush set or bendix |
Reconditioned starter | Middle | Older cars and budget friendly fixes |
New OEM or quality aftermarket starter | Highest | Burnt windings, high use, start stop cars |
On start stop cars, always fit a starter rated for start stop use.
How Is a Starter Replaced on an Automatic Car?
Starter motor replacement on an automatic follows the same steps as a manual, with one extra check first.
Step 1. Test the Battery, Neutral Safety Switch and Solenoid Signal
Automatics only crank in Park or Neutral. A faulty neutral safety switch looks exactly like a dead starter, so it is tested before anything comes off.
Step 2. Disconnect the Battery and Raise the Car
The main starter cable carries power straight from the battery, so the battery is disconnected first. The car goes up on a lift.
Step 3. Remove the Cables, Bolts and Old Starter
The main cable and the solenoid wire are unplugged, then the mounting bolts come out. On some engines, other parts must be removed to reach the starter.
Step 4. Inspect the Flexplate or Flywheel Teeth
The teeth are checked through the starter opening. Damaged teeth will chew up a new starter, so they must be found now.
Step 5. Fit, Torque and Test Several Starts
The new starter is bolted to the maker’s torque and the cables refitted. The car is then started several times to confirm clean, quiet cranking.

How Much Does Starter Motor Repair Cost in Dubai?
Car starter repair in Dubai starts from about AED 200 plus VAT for a simple fix, based on prices published by Dubai workshops in October 2026. A full repair or starter motor replacement commonly runs from about AED 350 to AED 1,200, depending on the car.
The cost climbs when:
- The car has start stop and needs a heavier duty starter
- The starter is buried under the intake or other parts
- The flywheel or flexplate teeth are damaged, which can mean removing the gearbox
Starter repair cost also depends on parts: a reconditioned unit costs less than a new OEM starter. Ask for a written quote after the starter has been tested.
How Long Does Starter Repair Take?
Most jobs take 1 to 4 hours at a workshop. A simple relay, cable or solenoid fix is quicker. It takes longer when the starter is hard to reach, or when a part has to be ordered for your model.
Is Replacing a Starter Motor Easy to Do Yourself?
On some older cars, where the starter sits low on the engine with two bolts and two wires, it is a moderate DIY job. On many modern cars, it is hidden under the intake manifold, and the job needs a lift and a few hours.
Keep three things in mind. The main cable is always live, so disconnect the battery first. A starter that failed because of a weak battery will fail again after a DIY swap. Start stop cars need the exact starter type.

Car Starter Repair FAQs
How long does a starter motor last?
It depends more on the number of starts than on distance. Rick’s Free Auto Repair Advice says a typical starter on a car without start stop is designed for about 50,000 start cycles.
Why does my car click but not start?
One click with bright lights usually means a worn solenoid or starter. Rapid clicking with dim lights usually means a weak battery.
Why won't my car start when hot?
Engine heat raises resistance in a worn starter and solenoid, so it struggles on hot restarts. It is a common sign the starter is near the end of its life.
Is a self starter a starter motor?
Yes. In the UAE, many drivers and mechanics call the starter motor the self starter or self motor.
Can a bad starter drain the battery?
It can. A starter with a stuck solenoid or a short can keep drawing power, and long cranking on a failing starter also drains the battery fast.
Can a bad starter damage the flywheel?
Yes. A worn bendix that grinds against the ring gear can chip the teeth on the flywheel or flexplate, which turns a starter job into a much bigger repair.
Can I drive with a bad starter?
Once the engine is running, the starter is not needed. The risk is that the car will not restart, so avoid switching off until you reach a workshop.
Does insurance cover starter repair?
Usually not. Gargash Insurance explains that standard UAE policies do not cover mechanical or electrical failures unless an accident or another covered event caused them.
