What Causes an Engine Oil Leak?

Worn gaskets and seals cause most engine oil leaks. These rubber and cork parts seal the joints between engine parts. Heat and age make them hard and shrink them, gaps open, and oil seeps out. Loose parts after a service and too much pressure inside the engine cause the rest.

Valve Cover Gasket

This is the most common leak. The valve cover sits on top of the engine, and its gasket hardens from constant heat. Oil seeps down the side of the engine and can drip onto the hot exhaust, which causes smoke and a burning smell.

Oil Pan Gasket and Drain Plug

The oil pan sits under the engine and holds the oil. Its gasket can fail with age, and the pan can be dented by debris or a speed bump. A drain plug without a new washer, or one that is loose, drips right after an oil change.

Oil Filter and Filter Housing

A loose filter, or an old filter seal left stuck on the engine under the new one, can leak badly. Some cars use a filter housing with its own seal, which also hardens over time.

Front and Rear Crankshaft Seals

These round seals sit where the crankshaft leaves the engine. The rear main seal sits between the engine and the gearbox, so a leak there drips from the middle of the car. It is one of the more expensive seals to replace because the gearbox usually has to come off.

Timing Cover Seal and Oil Cooler Lines

Some engines have a timing cover with its own gasket at the front. Cars with an oil cooler also have lines and fittings that can weep oil as their seals age.

Blocked PCV Valve or Too Much Oil

The PCV system lets pressure escape from inside the engine. When the PCV valve blocks, pressure builds and pushes oil past seals that are still healthy. Overfilling the engine with oil does the same, so the level should sit between the dipstick marks.

Why Dubai Heat Makes Oil Leaks Worse

Rubber seals harden faster when they go through heat cycles every day. A Dubai engine gets very hot in summer traffic, then cools overnight, and this repeats for months. Seals that would last longer in a cooler climate can start to seep sooner here.

Heat also raises the risk when a leak does start. Oil that drips onto an exhaust manifold in stop and go traffic can smoke or catch fire. Gulf News lists oil leaks among the seven leading causes of car fires in the UAE, because oil that falls on a hot exhaust can ignite while the car is running.

Signs of an Engine Oil Leak

Most leaks show up as spots, smells or a falling oil level well before they cause damage.

Oil Spots Under the Car

Brown or black spots on the floor where you park are the clearest sign. Lay a piece of cardboard under the engine overnight to see where they fall.

Burning Oil Smell or Smoke From the Bonnet

A sharp burning smell after a drive, or light smoke from under the bonnet, usually means oil is landing on the exhaust. Get this checked quickly.

Low Oil Level or the Oil Warning Light

If you top up oil between services, oil is going somewhere. If the oil pressure light comes on while you drive, stop the engine as soon as it is safe.

Blue Smoke: Burning Oil vs Leaking Oil

Blue smoke from the exhaust means oil is burning inside the engine, usually past worn piston rings or valve seals. That is a different problem from an outside leak, and our engine repair team handles it separately.

Is It Engine Oil, Coolant or Transmission Fluid?

The colour and the spot where it drips tell you which fluid is leaking. Dab a white tissue in the puddle and compare it with this table.

Colour and feel

Likely fluid

Where it usually drips

Brown to black, slippery

Engine oil

Front or middle of the car

Red or pink, oily

Transmission fluid

Middle of the car

Green, pink or orange, watery, sweet smell

Coolant

Front of the car

Clear water, no smell

AC condensation

Front, near the passenger side

Clear water is normal in Dubai, because the AC pulls moisture from humid air and drains it under the car. Red fluid points to our car transmission repair team. A coolant leak can lead to overheating, which our engine overheating repair service fixes.

Is an Engine Oil Leak Serious?

It depends on how fast it leaks and where. A light seep that leaves a few spots a week is not urgent, but it will get worse.

It becomes serious when:

  • You top up oil more than once between services
  • Oil drips onto the exhaust, which can cause smoke or a fire
  • The oil pressure warning light comes on
  • Oil reaches the alternator, starter or rubber belts

Low oil starves the engine of lubrication, and that can wreck bearings and other internal parts.

Can You Drive a Car With an Oil Leak?

For a small, slow leak, yes, for a short time, as long as you check the dipstick often and keep the oil topped up. Book a repair soon rather than living with it.

Stop driving and switch off the engine if:

  • The oil pressure light comes on
  • You see smoke from under the bonnet
  • You smell burning oil
  • Oil is pouring out rather than dripping

If any of these happen, call our car recovery team instead of driving on.

Can an Engine Oil Leak Be Repaired, Even on an Older Car?

Yes. Almost every leak can be fixed by replacing the gasket or seal that has failed. On an older car there is a catch: once one rubber seal has hardened, others are often close behind. Fixing the worst leak first and checking the rest at the same visit is usually the most practical approach.

How Do You Fix a Car Engine Oil Leak?

Car engine oil leak repair starts with finding the exact source. Oil runs down the engine and drips far from where it escapes, so guessing often replaces the wrong part. A proper repair follows five steps.

Step 1. Clean the Engine and Inspect It

The engine is degreased so fresh oil is easy to spot. The car goes on a lift so the underside can be checked.

Step 2. Trace the Leak With UV Dye

A small amount of UV dye can be added to the oil. After a short drive, a UV lamp makes the leak glow at its exact source. Castrol describes the same UV dye method in its guide to finding oil leaks.

Step 3. Check the PCV Valve and Oil Level

A blocked PCV valve or an overfilled engine will push oil past even a new seal, so both are checked before parts are fitted.

Step 4. Replace the Gasket or Seal to the Correct Torque

The failed gasket or seal is replaced and the mating surfaces are cleaned. Bolts are tightened to the maker’s torque, because overtightening can crack a cover and squash a new gasket.

Step 5. Road Test and Recheck for Seepage

The car is driven, then checked again for fresh oil. The oil level is topped up to the correct mark.

Leaks from the drain plug or oil filter are usually fixed during a car oil change with a new washer and a correctly fitted filter.

How Oil Leaks Damage Your Alternator, Starter and Belts

An oil leak rarely stays on the engine. It drips onto the parts below and around it.

  • Alternator: oil gets into the bearings and brushes, and the alternator stops charging
  • Starter motor: oil soaks the solenoid and brushes, and the car starts to click instead of crank
  • Drive belts and hoses: oil softens rubber, so belts slip and squeal and hoses swell

Replacing an alternator or starter without fixing the leak means the new part can fail the same way. Our car electrical repair team checks wiring and charging parts for oil damage.

How Much Does Engine Oil Leak Repair Cost in Dubai?

Engine oil leak repair in Dubai starts from about AED 300 plus VAT for simple jobs, based on prices published by Dubai workshops in October 2026. The final cost depends on which seal failed and how much has to come apart to reach it.

Usually cheaper

Usually more expensive

Drain plug washer

Rear main seal, which usually needs the gearbox removed

Oil filter seal

Timing cover seal on some engines

Valve cover gasket on most engines

Oil pan gasket when the subframe must be lowered

PCV valve

Several worn seals on a high mileage engine

Oil leak repair cost is easiest to judge after the leak has been traced. Ask for a written quote that names the part before work starts.

How Long Does Oil Leak Repair Take?

Most jobs take 2 to 6 hours at a workshop. A drain plug washer or oil filter takes minutes. A rear main seal takes much longer because the gearbox has to come out and go back in.

What Is the Best Sealant for Engine Oil Leaks?

No sealant permanently fixes a leaking gasket or seal. Stop leak additives work by softening and swelling old rubber seals, so they may slow a small seep from a hardened seal. They cannot fix a torn gasket, a loose bolt or a cracked oil pan. Castrol, the engine oil maker, describes these additives as having limited effect.

A high mileage engine oil with seal conditioners can help an older engine as part of regular servicing. For a leak you can see dripping, replacing the seal is the only lasting fix.

Can Thinner Oil Cause an Engine Oil Leak?

Thinner oil does not damage seals, but it can find its way past seals that are already worn. That is why some older engines seem to leak more after a switch to a lower viscosity oil.

The answer is not to pour in the thickest oil you can find. Use the grade in your owner’s manual, because modern engines rely on it for correct oil pressure. If the seals are worn, replace them.

Can an Oil Leak Stop Your Car From Starting?

A small oil leak alone does not stop a car from starting. It can lead to a no start when oil soaks the starter, when oil gets into the alternator and the battery goes flat, or when the engine has run very low on oil.

If your car will not start and you have noticed a leak, do not keep cranking. If the battery is flat, a jump start in Dubai gets you moving. If the engine ran without oil, it needs inspection before you try again.

How Do You Prevent Engine Oil Leaks?

Most leaks start with aging seals, so the aim is to slow that aging and catch problems early:

  • Change oil on time with the grade in your owner’s manual
  • Never overfill the engine
  • Have the PCV valve checked at major services
  • Fit a new drain plug washer at every oil change
  • Ask for a seepage check whenever the car is on a lift
  • Fix small leaks before oil reaches belts, the alternator or the starter

In Dubai, an inspection before summer is worth the few minutes it takes. Regular car maintenance catches most leaks while they are still cheap to fix.

Engine Oil Leak Repair FAQs

Why is oil leaking after an oil change?

Usually a loose drain plug, a missing drain plug washer, a loose filter, or the old filter seal left on under the new one. These are quick to fix, so go back to the workshop straight away.

Yes. Oil that drips onto a hot exhaust can ignite while the car is running. Gulf News lists oil leaks among the seven leading causes of car fires in the UAE.

Only as a short term measure. The leak will grow, oil can reach the exhaust or electrical parts, and running low even once can damage the engine.

Usually oil is dripping onto the exhaust, often from a valve cover gasket. If you also see blue exhaust smoke, the engine may be burning oil inside.

Yes, if the oil level drops too low. Without enough oil, bearings and other moving parts wear fast and can fail.

No. A small seep is not urgent, but healthy engines should not leak. It is a sign a seal has started to age.

The valve cover gasket, followed by the oil pan gasket and drain plug. Both are usually among the cheaper leaks to fix.

Usually not. Gargash Insurance explains that standard UAE policies do not cover mechanical failures unless an accident or another covered event caused them.
