AC Warm Again? Car AC Gas Refill in Al Quoz With a Leak Check First

Reviewed by the Rapid Rev Garage AC team. Last updated September 2026.

When your car AC blows warm air in Dubai traffic, a quick gas top up often brings the cold back for a few days. Then it fades again. That happens because a car AC is a sealed system. If the gas is low, it leaked out somewhere. At Rapid Rev Garage in Al Quoz, we find the leak before we refill, and we show you the cooling in numbers after. If the problem is bigger than gas, our car AC repair team fixes it in the same workshop.

  • Leak check before every refill
  • The right gas for your car, R134a or R1234yf
  • Gas charged by weight, not by guesswork
  • Vent temperature measured before and after

A small steering issue rarely stays small. Don't wait for it to get worse, or more expensive, than it needs to be.

AC Gas Refilling in Dubai Starts With a Leak Check

Car AC gas refilling in Dubai should start with a leak test. The AC is sealed, so low gas means gas escaped somewhere. At our Al Quoz workshop, we read the system pressure, test for leaks and show you any leak with its repair price before we add gas. Then we vacuum out moisture, add the right compressor oil and charge R134a or R1234yf by weight to your car maker’s figure. We measure your vent temperature before and after, so you see the result in numbers. A standard refill takes about an hour, and the price depends on your car’s gas type and how much gas it holds.

How Your Car AC Works and Why the Gas Runs Low

Knowing how the system works shows why adding gas alone rarely fixes it.

How Your Car AC Turns Hot Air Cold

Your AC moves heat out of the cabin using a gas called refrigerant. The compressor squeezes the gas and makes it hot. The condenser at the front of the car cools it into a liquid. The expansion valve drops its pressure, and the evaporator behind your dashboard lets it soak up heat from the cabin air. The blower then pushes that cooled air through your vents.

Why AC Gas Runs Low in Dubai

Dubai is hard on car AC systems. The UAE’s National Center of Meteorology recorded 51.8°C at Sweihan on 1 August 2025, a new August record. Most cars here also run the AC almost all year. That constant load causes leaks in four common ways:

  • Rubber O rings and seals dry out in the heat, so gas seeps out at the joints.
  • The condenser sits at the front, where stones and road grit can dent or pierce it.
  • Dust from building sites and industrial areas like Al Quoz packs into the condenser fins.
  • Moving between hot streets and cool underground car parks loosens fittings over time.

Why a Quick AC Gas Top Up Stops Working Within Weeks

A top up adds gas but leaves the leak in place. The new gas escapes the same way, sometimes in days, sometimes over a few weeks. You pay for gas each time, and in between the compressor can run short of oil. Fixing the leak once costs less than refilling again and again.

7 Signs Your Car AC Needs a Gas Refill

Some of these signs point to low gas and some point to a different fault.

Sign

Likely cause

What we check

Warm air from the vents

Low gas from a leak, or a compressor fault

Pressure and leak test

Cold while driving, warm in traffic

Weak cooling fan or blocked condenser

Fan and condenser

Cabin takes a long time to cool

Low gas or a dirty condenser

Pressure and condenser

Compressor clicks on and off often

Low gas pressure

Leak test, then refill by weight

Hissing from the dashboard or bonnet

Gas escaping from a leak

UV dye or electronic detector

Frost on the AC pipes

Low gas or a blockage

Pressure on both sides

Oily marks on AC pipe joints

Leaking gas carrying oil out

Seal or hose, then refill

Low Gas or an AC Fault? How to Tell Before You Pay for a Refill

A refill only helps when the gas level is the problem. Our pressure readings tell us which one you have.

When AC Gas Refilling Is Enough

A refill brings the cooling back when the readings show low gas, the leak is fixed, and the compressor, fan and condenser all work. It’s also needed after any repair that opens the system, such as a new hose.

When Your Car Needs AC Repair Instead

If the compressor clutch doesn’t engage, the cooling fan doesn’t spin, or the condenser is blocked, new gas won’t bring the cold back. Warm air from one side only usually points to a blend door inside the dashboard. These faults need a repair first.

What AC Gas Refilling Covers vs a Full AC Service

A refill deals with the gas: leak test, vacuum, oil and a measured charge. A full AC service also covers the cabin filter, condenser cleaning, the blower, fans and relays. If your car is due for maintenance too, book a full car service in the same visit.

AC Gas Keeps Running Out? How We Find the Leak First

We use more than one test, because no single method finds every leak.

Pressure Test and Gauge Readings

Gauges on the high and low sides show whether the pressures are normal for the outside temperature. Low readings on both sides point to missing gas.

UV Dye and Electronic Leak Detection

We add a dye that travels with the gas and glows under a UV lamp at the leak. Our dyes meet SAE J2297, the SAE International standard for dye safety with AC parts. An electronic detector picks up gas at joints that are hard to see. SAE J2791 and SAE J2913 set the accuracy rules for these detectors.

Nitrogen Pressure Test for Hidden Leaks

When a system is empty or the leak is tiny, we fill it with dry nitrogen and watch the gauge. If the pressure drops, there’s a leak, and we find it without wasting AC gas.

Where Car AC Leaks Usually Hide

Most leaks turn up at O rings, hose joints, the condenser, the compressor shaft seal and the service ports. The evaporator inside the dashboard can leak too, though less often.

You See the Leak and the Price Before We Refill

If we find a leak, we show it to you in person or by photo and give you the repair price. You decide what happens next.

Which AC Gas Does Your Car Use? R134a vs R1234yf

Cars in the UAE use one of two gases, and you can’t swap one for the other.

Which Cars Use R134a

R134a became the standard car AC gas in the mid 1990s. Many cars built before R1234yf became common use it, and some newer models still do. The label under your bonnet tells you for sure.

Which Cars Use R1234yf

R1234yf replaced R134a in many new cars because it does far less harm to the climate. Its global warming potential (GWP) is under 1, compared with 1,430 for R134a, based on IPCC figures. Since 2017, the EU’s MAC Directive 2006/40/EC has banned AC gases with a GWP above 150 in all new cars sold there.

How to Read the AC Gas Label Under Your Bonnet

Look for a small sticker near the radiator or under the bonnet lid. It names the gas, the amount in grams and often the oil type. If the sticker is missing, we test the gas with a refrigerant identifier before we connect any machine.

Why the Refill Machine Must Match Your Car’s Gas

R134a and R1234yf use different service fittings and must never be mixed. SAE International sets separate machine standards: SAE J2788 for R134a and SAE J2843 for R1234yf. R1234yf is rated mildly flammable, class A2L under ASHRAE Standard 34, so its machine is built for it.

AC Gas Recharge for Hybrid and Electric Cars

Many hybrid and electric cars use a high voltage electric compressor. It needs an insulating compressor oil named by the car maker, often POE. The Mobile Air Climate Systems Association (MACS) warns that traces of regular PAG oil left in machine hoses can cause electrical faults. Send us your model and we’ll confirm what your car needs.

How Much AC Gas Does a Car Need?

These are broad examples only. Your car’s exact figure is on the AC label under the bonnet.

Car Type

Typical AC Gas Amount

Small cars and hatchbacks

About 350 to 500 g

Sedans and small SUVs

About 450 to 700 g

Large SUVs and pickups

About 600 to 900 g

Large SUVs and vans with rear AC

About 900 g to 1.4 kg

A wrong amount in either direction weakens cooling, so we always charge to the label figure.

Why We Charge AC Gas by Weight, Not by Pressure

Gas pressure changes with the outside temperature, so filling until the gauge looks right is guesswork in Dubai heat. Our machine weighs the gas as it goes in and stops at your car maker’s figure.

What Too Much or Too Little AC Gas Does to Your Compressor

Compressor oil circulates around the system with the gas. Too little gas means weak cooling and can leave the compressor short of oil. Too much gas raises the pressure and makes the compressor work harder. Both shorten its life.

Why “1.5 Ton AC Gas” Doesn’t Apply to Cars

“Ton” measures the cooling power of home and office AC units. A car AC is filled by weight in grams, based on your car maker’s figure.

Our 9 Step Car AC Gas Refilling Process

An AC gas recharge, also called refrigerant filling, means putting back the correct amount of gas after the system is checked, emptied and sealed. Here’s how we do it:

  1. Vent Reading: We measure the air at your centre vent.
  2. Pressure and Gas Check: Gauges on both sides, plus a refrigerant identifier.
  3. Leak Test: UV dye, electronic detector or nitrogen.
  4. Your Approval: We show you any leak and its price.
  5. Gas Recovery: The old gas goes into the machine, not into the air.
  6. Vacuum and Hold Test: The pump removes air and moisture, then we hold the vacuum to confirm the system stays sealed.
  7. Oil and Gas: The correct compressor oil, then gas charged by weight.
  8. Final Checks: A second vent reading, plus the cooling fan and compressor clutch.
  9. Job Card: Both vent readings in writing.

Step 6 matters more than most people think. Moisture left inside can react with the gas and oil to form acids and sludge, which damage seals and metal parts over time.

How Long Does AC Gas Refilling Take?

A standard refill with the leak test, vacuum and cooling test takes about an hour. If we find a leak, the repair time depends on the part, and we tell you before we start. We’re open 24 hours, so you can drop the car off before or after work. Need it done today? Send us your car model on WhatsApp for a price and a time slot.

How Much Does a Car AC Gas Refill Cost in Dubai (2026)?

The cost of car AC gas refilling depends on which gas your car uses and how much gas the system holds. R1234yf costs more than R134a, and a large SUV with rear AC can need more than twice the gas of a small hatchback. Send us your car model and we’ll give you the exact price before you come in. All prices in the UAE are subject to 5% VAT.

What’s Included in Our AC Gas Refilling Package

  • Leak test before any gas goes in
  • Pressure check on both sides
  • Vacuum to remove moisture and air
  • Correct compressor oil
  • R134a or R1234yf charged by weight
  • Vent temperature before and after, on your job card

What Changes the Price of Your Refill

The price of AC gas refilling moves with the gas type, the amount your car needs, and any leak repair and parts. Extras such as a new cabin filter add to the total.

Why R1234yf Refill Costs More Than R134a

R1234yf gas costs more to make and buy. It also needs its own machine and careful handling because it is mildly flammable.

What If Your Car AC Loses Cooling Again After an AC Gas Recharge?

If your AC turns warm soon after a refill, there’s a leak that wasn’t fixed or a fault that isn’t about gas. Bring the car back and tell us when it started. We record the pressure and vent readings on every job, so we can compare them with new readings and find what changed.

Why Dubai Drivers Choose Rapid Rev Garage for AC Gas Refilling

Our garage in Al Quoz is rated 5.0 on Google from more than 260 reviews as of September 2026. Here’s what sits behind that rating.

What Your Before and After Vent Readings Tell You

A clear drop between the two readings shows the refill worked. A small change tells us something else needs checking, such as the fan or compressor, and we tell you so.

Common AC Gas Problems We See in Al Quoz

  • Topped up twice elsewhere. The cooling faded within weeks each time. The leak test usually finds a worn O ring, a leaking condenser or a loose service port.
  • Cold while driving, warm in traffic. The gas level is often fine. The real cause is a weak cooling fan or a condenser blocked by dust.
  • Newer car, wrong gas. Some cars that need R1234yf get topped up with R134a elsewhere. We check the gas before we connect the machine.

Our AC team in Al Quoz works on both R134a and R1234yf systems, uses a separate machine for each gas and tests for leaks before any refill. The same mechanics handle compressor, condenser and fan repairs, so your car stays in one workshop.

How Often Should You Refill Car AC Gas in Dubai?

You shouldn’t need to refill car AC gas on a schedule. The system is sealed, and the gas doesn’t get used up like fuel. A small loss over many years can happen through hoses and seals. If you need a refill within a year or two, there’s a leak worth finding.

The Best Time to Service Your Car AC in Dubai

Book an AC check in March or April, before daytime heat climbs past 40°C. A small leak that goes unnoticed in winter shows up fast in June.

Habits That Keep the Gas in Your Car AC

  • Rinse dust off the condenser gently, without high pressure on the fins.
  • Fix small leaks early, before the compressor runs short of oil.
  • Skip DIY cans that contain leak sealant.
  • Change the cabin filter when your service book says.

Can You Refill Car AC Gas Yourself?

DIY AC recharge cans rarely fix the problem. A can adds gas without finding the leak or removing moisture. Without a scale, it’s easy to add too much or too little gas. Some cans contain sealant that can block small parts, and most are R134a, so they’re wrong for R1234yf cars. A workshop refill checks for leaks, uses the right gas and charges the exact amount your car maker sets.

Can Car AC Gas Be Refilled at Home?

A proper refill needs a leak test, a vacuum pump, a scale and the right machine for your car’s gas. That setup works best at our Al Quoz workshop. For other jobs at your home or office, our mobile mechanic can come to you.

Car AC Gas Refilling FAQs

These are the questions Dubai drivers ask us most about AC gas.

Why is my car AC blowing warm air?

Low gas from a leak is the most common cause. A failed compressor clutch, a dead cooling fan or a blocked condenser cause the same symptom, and a pressure check tells them apart.

In a healthy sealed system, the gas lasts for many years. If cooling drops within a year or two of a refill, there’s a leak.

Yes. Low gas can leave the compressor short of oil, which wears it faster. A new compressor costs far more than a leak repair.

An AC gas recharge means filling the AC with the right amount of gas after the old gas is recovered and the system is vacuumed. Refill, recharge and regas mean the same job.

Only when low gas is the cause. If the fan, condenser or compressor is at fault, new gas won’t help.

Not quite. A top up adds gas on top of what’s left. A full refill recovers the old gas, removes moisture and charges the exact amount by weight.

No. They use different fittings and pressures, and mixed gas can’t be recovered safely. Use only the gas named on your bonnet label.
